I’ll admit it i’m a skincare addict. They truly are a weak point for me so I’m always trying new formulas, brands and products. I’m at that age now, where I’m aiming for ageing prevention and reduction of lines. The Ordinary is a brand that I’ve heard great things about but have never tried……until now. I started with The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion.
This is review 1 of 3 as I’ve been trying three of their products for a few weeks now. Firstly, let’s talk about the packaging and price. The Ordinary products are beautifully designed. The packaging looks high end and pharmaceutical. Applying the product is easy thanks to the dropper inside the bottle and this particular product only cost £8.
So what exactly is a retinoid?
Retinoids are derivatives of vitamin A. They are prescription strength products so can’t usually be bought without prescription. Retinols are weaker versions which can be bought without prescription but take longer to work.
Retinoids have been successfully used for acne treatment since the 70s, but recently they’ve been proven to have anti-ageing properties. Retinoids work by increasing cell regeneration and removing old cells. They also stimulate collagen, which increases skin elasticity and smoothes fine lines, as well as correcting pigmentation.
Retinoids are strong, so it’s important to start with small amounts until your skin builds up tolerance. Start with twice a week and work up to daily use.
You should treat them with caution, especially if you have sensitive skin. It is not unusual to suffer from redness at the start.
The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion is a dream to apply. Lightweight with a creamy texture. It absorbs quickly into the skin and is fragrance free. No strong overpowering scent.
Some retinoids can irritate and sting but this one felt great on my skin with no tingling or irritability. These products can be drying so use caution if you already have dry skin. My skin is combination but I found this product didn’t dry out my skin badly unlike other skincare products I’ve tried. But I would advise using SPF after applying it as it’ll increase your skins sensitivity.
I use this product daily and it makes my skin much smoother, it gives my complexion a beautiful glow and foundation applies flawlessly. If you’re new to retinoids I would still advise to start off using it twice a week and gradually increase use.
I really can’t think of any negatives to The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion. It has left my skin plumper, smoother, reduced my lines and helped even out my skin pigmentation. It takes a few weeks to notice a difference on wrinkles but it is well worth the wait.
