In our modern lifestyle toxic chemicals are everywhere. Chemicals can be found in a whole host of everyday household products. Some of them haven’t even been scientifically tested to see if they’re safe for humans. Scary huh? Carcinogens and allergens are everywhere.
But there are steps we can take to reduce the risk and create a greener, more natural home. Read on for my tips and tricks to detox your home:
Remove shoes when entering your home
In the average day our shoes will pick up a huge array of dust, dirt and pesticides. Why spread it throughout your home? Make sure every household member removes their shoes when entering the home.
Plants are your friend
The components of the soil can help to reduce and eliminate nasties that hang in the air (like formaldehyde).
Make the move to non-toxic products
So many cleaning products can be replaced with readily available household ingredients – baking soda, lemon juice i’m looking at you.
Eliminate modern air fragrances
Try making your own with essential oils instead. Air fresheners tend to include phthalates.
These tend to be packed with nasty chemicals. Instead opt for tea tree oil which is kinder and safer to use.
Pay attention to labelling on food
Avoid anything with artificial flavors, colors or flavor enhancers. Studies have found food additives affect around 60 to 70% of people, most of whom are unaware they are effected.
Avoid foods that are high in pesticides
These include: apples, blueberries, peppers, celery, cucumbers, peaches, potatoes and strawberries. Or opt for a local farmers market where you know the source.
Pay attention to the labels of cosmetic products
Avoid products containing any of the following: formaldehyde, lead acetate, petroleum, phenylenediamine and silica.
Use a HEPA filter when you hoover your house. This will reduce the amount of chemicals in your home.
There are of course many other ways to detox your home but these will set you off on a good footing and are relatively easy to accomplish.
